QS Freelance was established after identifying that many companies did not need full time Quality or Health & Safety management. But the task itself was still required. Often a busy director or member of staff will take on the task but then it was put aside when other demands occur.
Although my background is primarily in Electronic Engineering, I spent many years working with the Fire research Establishment, now part of the Building research establishment, so fire safety is an obvious area of interest. However, I moved into manufacturing industry, from small Welding machine manufacture to CNC control system design and manufacture. Eventually joining the QA department of Texas Instruments Ltd as a failure analysis engineer.
Quality assurance led me to BSI where I joined the Electro Technology group and qualified as a Lead assessor for BS 5750 and, eventually ISO9001 During this time I was involved with over 400 companies. Including Hewlett Packard, becoming a senior assessor and the Contract manager for the HP instrumentation group.
I left BSI to work as a consultant, and worked around the world in several prestigious companies, such as Hewlett Packard in Colorado, Sanyo and Panasonic in Mexico and Cable and Wireless in London. I then took a position with the Underwriter Laboratories organization in the UK.
During my time with UL it was clear that a need existed within many companies to have a resource available to cover their Quality and H&S needs but without the salary overhead, Hence the establishment of QSF.
